Three-Fold Risk of Exacerbation

After Infection

During a study on the effects of stress and Multiple Sclerosis, it was also reported by researchers who conducted the study in the Netherlands, that the risk of developing a Multiple Sclerosis exacerbation following an infection was tripled.

D Buljevac et al, Department of Neurology, Rotterdam, Netherlands, studied the effects of stressful, self-reported life events in 73 patients with Multiple Sclerosis over a period of up to 60 months.

In order to distinguish the effects of stress on patients with Multiple Sclerosis it was necessary to exclude the effects of infection. "Throughout the study, 134 exacerbations occurred in 56 patients and 136 infections occurred in 57 patients."

"Infections were associated with a threefold increase in the risk of exacerbation, but this effect was found to be independent of experienced stress."

BMJ 2003; 327: 646-0.
